Situated between the North African coast and the Italian island of Sicily, Malta is ideally located to provide sun, sand and delicious cuisine to all those that visit its shores. With a chequered history that includes being occupied at one time or another by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Aragonese, the French, and most recently the British, Malta has a wonderful array of architectural delights to treat visitors upon arrival. Ggantia, said to be one of the oldest free-standing buildings in the world, is located on Malta, as is St John's Co-Cathedral, the Palace of the Grand Masters, Fort St. Elmo, Fort St. Angelo, and the catacombs of St Paul and St Agatha. Malta, as well as the nearby islands of Gozo and Cominoto, also provides many opportunities for holiday-makers to relax with beautiful beaches and walking tracks criss-crossing the archipelago.
Malta is relatively easy to get to from international destinations, with good ferry and air connections to the surrounding region. Valetta, Malta's capital, is visited by ferries from Pozzello, Salerno, Catania, Reggio di Calabria and Genova. Private vessels can dock elsewhere around the island with prior permission. Malta's largest airport, Malta International Airport at Luqa on the main island, is the home airport of Air Malta which flies to many international destinations. Other airlines that use the facilities include British Airways, easyJet, First Choice Airways, Ryanair and Thomas Cook Airlines. As Malta is an island best explored by car, it is recommended that you organize car rental prior to arrival. All of the international brands are represented with Avis, Hertz, Budget, Thrifty and National amongst them. |
